Stamping hooves rend the air as cows and calves moved out eagerly, their heads bent back in shrilling alarm. The bull ahead was an enormous column of muscle, threatening with his spears overhead. He would not be cowed like his wives.

Suddenly the bull broke from his posturing and rammed forward, rack soaring like discharged arrows among the trees. Rashepses pivoted with a thrill, his bellows sent broadly over the pummeling of feet.

“Watch yourselves! He’s doubling back towards the herd!”
