He roamed the higher reaches of the mountain's many routes, seeking out an exposed section of the rock face where he could test his mettle beneath the spring sun; it was warm, perhaps too warm, but Revui was invested in the task. He wanted to finally map out the entirety of the mountainside so that he'd have some tactical knowledge of every inch of the claim—whether it was practical or not.

Revui lingered near a cluster of trees near a deep-set ledge. It was large enough to support three or four wolves in every direction, a large, naturally-occuring cleave in the balding stone escarpment. It was magnificent. Around the edge there were many drop-off points that he'd have to be wary of, or trees growing at strange angles from below.

The boy shuffled along with his nose to the dirt, investigating every inch of the surface and trying to figure out if anyone else had found this place before. No scents rose to his huffing snout and so he paused, withdrawing from his hunt, feeling triumphant.

Less triumphant in the wake of Revui was Dirge, who did not entirely care for the higher reaches of the mountain. He did not make trips so high very often yet it seemed fair to do today—the ensuing chaos of the lower climes pushed him for his moments of solitude, if nothing else than to gather his thoughts. The opportunity of those higher climes also presented vistas he could look on with unfamiliarity.

What he didn't anticipate finding there was anyone at all. Revui's shark-backed appearance met him as he rose and dipped with the land; any plans he had to collect his thoughts here were whisked away on the cool breeze. Perhaps he hadn't had the only mind to consider getting away, at least in the sense that did not remove them from the mountainside for any length.

He chuffed quietly, not wanting to startle or provoke the yearling. Things had been tense, almost too much so lately, and it was that which gave him reason to keep distance between them. Dirge thought on Yami briefly as his steps slowed, and his gaze swung out to the ledge and the views past it. It seemed a nice place, so far.

How best to christen this new-found vista than with a brawl? The young man felt invigorated by his discovery and swelled with pride, eager to share the secret of this plateau with those closest to him — Arcturus, Hydra, perhaps Speedy if he could get over his bias — but it was none of these wolves that met his gaze. Revui spotted Dirge and lost a bit of his enthusiasm; he saw this man as a fixture upon the mountain as assured as the rest of them, but he was not one of them. Hydra held him in esteem and so Revui accepted him to some degree, but Revui would always be xenophobic.

At best, Dirge was a worthy adversary. So when he rounded upon the man's position he huffed and crooned with bestial notes, calling him forth with gutteral sounds as easily as he did with the curve of his body — defensive in posture, then ducking in to a play-bow that didn't look right (perhaps because he looked so hefty in his adult size). He repeated the process a few times, encroaching on Dirge's space little by little, impatient and hoping he'd take the invitation for what it was - a peace offering of sorts.

But his gaze was not to linger there for long on those vistas either; Revui came around at his call and acknowledged him. What followed then left Dirge wary, as he was not one to have imagined Revui ever in a playful state. Perhaps that wasn't true either, but he certainly believed that the two of them had different answers as to what fun exactly was. His chin raised, his head to tilt questioning at first as the boy made his awkward display... and then it continued. It was a boggling, bobbling sort of thing, and it chipped away at his own defenses gently. He gave him the benefit of the doubt, and opted to take the olive branch.

So he'd humor him then, he decided; his tail swished through the air to return this peace offering even as he was crowded, and his feet moved at their own rhythm. Another bow in and Dirge reached to gently mouth at the passing of an ear before following it eagerly. This was a game he could play without thought, as he and Hydra both had time and time again. His steps shuffled against the soil and loose stones, and he gave Revui a lively bump with his own body.

Why waste the good mood?
