All Welcome

Steam rose up to meet the chilly morning air. The mountain in the distance seemed to quiver with violent delight at the premise of its own eruption. Iwa could see a neon orange that seemed to leak from the peaks and down the jagged rocks. Even from the flatland where he stood, the boar could feel the heat from the volcanic substance. More so, even while he had been blessed with the spirit of Kaji, Iwaizumi knew better than to approach the slow-moving, liquid flame.

The brutish figure nosed over a few stray pieces of debris before slurping up several worms that had tried to escape back into an earthy hideaway. Were it not for his ability to scrounge for insects and nuts from the ground, to pulling strings of leftover meat from prey that had been hunted down by a much larger predator, Iwa would have likely died long before that moment.

He was crafty, though, and he had learned how to adapt to the changes in the world so that he might continue to thrive there. Almost instinctively, the brutish fighter lifted his stout head upward and gazed toward the burning alp with an intense curiosity in the dark black of his gaze.

unlike the boar, riley did not know better than to approach the hellish glow that lingered on the horizon. his gaze greedily supped the flare of neon against dark blues and bruised purples -- an old hunger overtook him, seizing his interest and carrying him many miles.

so rapt was the boy's attention on that fugitive glare that he hardly saw the boar in the rising mists. mistaking it first as greyback come to collect him (by now laurel would surely know he was missing) riley's tail flagged in defiance, his eyes narrowing to slits. yet as the ash fell around him he realized the beast moved with a lumbering gait more akin to living rock than wolf. curious, the boy moved closer -- his attention engulfed in the way the boar's immense silhouette seemed outlined in harsh highlights of arcing red and gold.

Transfixed by the liquid flame, Iwa had all but missed the approaching figure until the young wolf had drawn close enough to his position to turn his snout in the direction of the stout and doggish shape. The boar fastened his inky vision on the young beast with a rare sense of confidence. In spite of their blatant difference in height, the Johsai-native had learned long before that moment that he should not fear those who appeared greater than him. Kaji had made a home in marrow of his ribs and the steady beating of his heart.

Iwaizumi drew his head upward and flicked his tail from side to side in a nearly irritable fashion. His gaze never strayed from the features of the muscular young predator. In the depths of his glittering jet-black gaze, there were signs of a competitor. The boar played out the scenario in his head, the way a tactician would, before taking several steps forward. A daring snort was issued from his broad snout.

while it was a fairly well-established fact riley could sometimes be a few bricks short of a brickhouse, he wasn't so stupid as to challenge this -- well, whatever it was. he sniffed curiously, startling only a little as the massive beast swung its equally massive face towards him. riley was transfixed immediately by the tusks -- he wanted his own; how easily it would be to gore and disfigure if he possessed those glistening slices of dentition..

but the gleam in the beast's eyes unnerved the boy; he looked only a moment longer on the monolith, in awe of its size and the wickedness of its blackened razored spine  -- and then he hustled his chubby behind out of dodge.
