For a moment Laurel prepared for confrontation again, knowing that she was out of line but caring little for it. He started it. Her eyes narrowed as she looked at him, almost daring him to do it, say it, but he didn't. Instead he actually apologised. Laurel felt taken aback and didn't know how to respond right away, but tried not to show it. "Well, good," she said when he finished talking, the haughty tone still to her voice. She didn't really know what else to say at first, and a silence lingered between them for a few seconds.
"And if she showed up now? Would you just leave again?" she asked scrutinisingly. "Everyone makes mistakes. The only thing we can do to learn from them is just... doing things better next time." And Laurel knew that he'd likely leave again. But what if he would say 'no' and then do 'yes'? She almost sort of hoped that the girl'd show up again, just so that Laurel could prove her point — or Xan could.
