All Welcome

Galena entered the Teekons as a wintry slurry threatened to ruin her hunt. The cold weather shifted from snow to rain and back as she tracked her quarry. Prey paths crissed-crossed within the Downs - a good sign; a bountiful area - but every animal had hunkered down from the spring storm. She exhaled, lifting her gaze to the new horizon. She did not recognize this land (as she had not the one before... or the one before that), but perhaps it was the destination she had been seeking.

skies beleaguered by wintry storms entered the teekon, depositing silver veils of early-spring snow. astara moved between the slush, her toes spread as unsavory cold licked her limbs.

how she hated the winter, the mud from the snow, the cold. spring could not come soon enough.

a figure moving along the snow-laden frontier caught the blackbird's attention. its figure was lean and powerful -- she watched as the creature skulked between passes of snow, her silvery fur blending in with the monotone of the landscape.

astara moved off to investigate, her ears cupped but posture neutral.

Galena's gaze defocused as she looked across the rolling Downs, lost in thought as drops of sleet clung to her. Distant memories ebbed -- of her clan and sisters. It wasn't a sad thought... or a happy one. It simply was. That time in her life had passed and soon a new chapter would be inked. She had been groomed for this journey, mentored by a prudent matriarch, a Reverend Mother, with a knack for prescience.

The voyager's sight sharpened when a darkling spot crept into her peripheral. Another wolf in the valley. Alone? Galena leaned into herself as she watched the stranger -- a woman -- move with a certain self-assured fluidity in a peculiar posture. She appeared novel, and the vagrant found herself immediately intrigued. Galena loped towards her company with an open, but neutral demeanor, eager to asses if this sister was friend or foe.

astara's ears flipped full mast as the ingot-hued woman spied her and made her way towards the nightshade at a self-assured lope. astara matched the pace at a smooth jog, her tail swaying as they drew close.

she lowered her head to inspect this other. should the grey sentinel allow it, astara would snuff along her cheek, her flank, her hips -- to take in where the woman had been, who she was, and what her purpose was here.

The two females closed in distance, Galena mirroring Astara's instinctual intention. She allowed approach without apprehension, biased towards trusting women far more than their counterpart, and kept her muscles laxed as the inky stranger traveled down her figure.

Astara would be able to smell distant lands to the north (their wet and mossy scrim, mountainous and densely forested), blood from a past kill, the scent of another vagrant wolf she had fought with... but, most notably, the lack of pack or pride. Galena was a dispersal wolf without allegiance. If Astara was exceptionally keen she'd pick out her natal scent of other women, for Galena hailed from a matriarchal society which was deep in their own ways and traditions.

While her company probed, Galena took the moment to steal a glance towards the midnight woman. She noticed her dangerous violet eyes and the way in which her hair draped haphazardly along her spine. A shiver rippled through her -- a pump of adrenaline. Galena became that much more intrigued by this unusual being. She, too, sought answers by scent and moved towards Astara to catch a whiff of her history along the nape, should she grant permission.

astara nosed warily, drinking in the scent of galena with greedy attention. foremost, she noted a lack of allegiance to this pewter she-beast -- the scent of the wilderness hung damp and persistent to her wild tresses. astara noted the lingering scent of a kill, of another wolf -- but her nose was not so keen to detect the faint traces of galena's past life.

in astara, galena would notice her pelt rife with the scent of conifers (bearclaw) and merrick. she might note the faint aroma of packmates, of her own scuffles, and the faded blood of a coyote she and fields had tracked and killed the day before. she might notice astara's pelt bore a few cuts, one particularly ugly and crusted along her nape.

her inspection complete, astara pulled away from the steel warrior and chuffed acceptingly of the other's presence. what had brought astara to the downs originally was the faded musk of another coyote band -- she pointedly nosed along the snowmelt where the scent still pervaded, her gaze landing inquiringly on galena in invitation.

The first thing Galena noticed was with her eyes: the crusted, healing wound on the nape of Astara's neck -- otherwise obscured by the woman's raven colored hair. The vagrant was careful to not linger too long, tongue rolling over her nose apologetically for having come too near such a sensitive zone in the first place. She continued, instead, at a lower longitude across the native she-wolf's pelt.

The aromas came next. Bearclaw valley... a smell not like the Downs they stood in. A nearby territory? The scent of wolf was on her, too... suggesting she ran with a pack... and most notably, the pungent scent of a male. A mate? Had he covered her? T'was the season. Galena's expression stayed stony and unchanged despite her deep thought (and resentment).

With their greetings exchanged and a new objective uncovered, the ingot shook her pelt and joined Astara at the shoulder. "Lead the way," she said in a low and quiet voice, unaware that her company did not speak.

as the woman stepped to her shoulder and spoke, astara's tail waved in response before she skulked off. the scent of coyotes was her main attraction, but with a comrade besides her, there was hope of ridding the valley of them versus just harassing them. astara had planned to worry the beasts into leaving, but if there were two of them, things could be done much more efficiently.

she nosed along a patch of bare earth; here a relatively fresh print sunk into the mud. the blackbird stepped back, allowing galena a chance to inspect it if she wished. they were near.

an excited chill ran the blackbird's spine.

Galena trailed her hunt-leader, moving in time with a practiced synchronicity. Familiar memories came flooding back as she fell into position, sinew and muscles moving automatically with trained precision. This is how she was reared... to hunt among women like a pride of lionesses (for they were the most cunning and swift). The stormy vagabond appreciated this familiarity and for the first time since her dispersal, Galena felt at home.

She watched the raven witch spot the track. Galena's movement became more thoughtful as she tasted the air... coyote stink despite the slurry which continued to rain down. Moon-colored eyes met Astara's brilliant purple gaze for a briefest of moments and, without a word, split off to set up an ambush.

astara would have appreciated the upbringing in which galena was reared; she too, felt a certain connection with women that was not shared with men. barring merrick, she had very little use for the men in her lives.

meeting the lioness' gaze astara prowled separate, head low to the ground and searching.

once she was upon the trail she moved at a skulking pace, coyote scent thicker and thicker until at last she saw a parting flash of auburn ruff between the trees -- here she split into a flat run with muzzle contorted into a determined grimace.

Dice roll, Galena fails to catch a coyote

Galena slunk into position and laid still. Small frozen droplets collected on her gunmetal hair as she waited for the raven's charge. Suddenly, a desperate shrieking and smell of fear sounded the start of the hunt.

Like a thunder, the vagrant burst from her cover, lips curled into a twisted snarl as she cut off the coyote's escape. Her teeth snapped shut, but their quarry was quick, and only a tuft of hair became ensnared between the bear trap that was her jaws. Despite this, the hunt was not yet ruined. Galena came-by the howling prey, driving them towards Astara.

coyotes were fast, but the blackbird faster. her strides longer. her teeth stronger.

she lurched for the first she saw and it sprung with a shriek, darting past her teeth. astara set after it at a loose trot, head down as she tracked its trail. ahead she heard the snap of branches and saw the lioness' form lurch, the coyote springing from her jaws much as it had done to astara.

in this moment the wraith surged after the thing, while its attention was elsewhere. she set her sights on the beast's hind limb and drove for a hock, teeth bared and ready to churn bone to brittle.

Saliva pooled in Galena's mouth as she pursued the coyote with moon-sized, fixated eyes -- cutting it off on the turn of a dime. The shadow drew nearer as their quarry desperately looked for an exit... and suddenly lurched away from Asatara as her maw drew wide. But... the ground was slick with sleet. The coyote could dodge no more.

A sickening crunch. The poor beast's hind leg was trapped between the black woman's teeth. It cried horribly and turned back 'round on it's jailer, intent to bite at Astara's face, desperate for release. In that moment the coyote forgot about the second lioness and suddenly Galena was mightily upon it. It screamed again as she took a mouthful of the coyote's neck... and then it screamed no more.

with thin hock clapsed between her jaws, astara saw the coyote's end draw near.

it turned to her with a scream, white teeth raking down her muzzle in a searing arc. she balked, limb still gripped tightly as the pain bloomed across her face in scarlet vision -- and then, suddenly, the coyote's agony was cut short.

she released the slack limb, her fur on end and muzzle crinkled in a haughty grimace. she apprised the lioness with an approving glance, spitting tufts of fur from her teeth as blood dripped slowly down her long muzzle.

Last post from meee!

The coyote became still. Dead. Galena dropped it to the ground, licking her chops. The adrenaline slowed, her heart rate and breathing became even. She assessed Astara and returned the approving look. The dark woman certainly appeared even more dangerous than she had before, with a smirking smile and fresh blood along her mouth.

Galena was drawn to her, deciding that she liked this woman and thought to herself that they made a good team. She would hunt alongside Astara until no more coyotes could be found, and then would part ways, wandering off towards Blackfoot Forest to continue her investigation of Teekon. Yet, the memory of the black woman would, eventually, draw her back to the Valley.

they were two cut of a similar cloth, then. a silent exchange transpired between the two of them: they would hunt alongside one another, working as an admirable team.

eventually the time would come to part - astara would watch galena go with hidden interest. this one was strong - this one special - merrick would surely think so.

she would think of the woman for a time, and look forward to the day she returned to the claw.
