He came to his wife, first, admitting, "I couldn't find them," in a low voice before his attention was split by his daughters. He kissed them in greeting, and when he lifted his head again to look at Vairë, he found that his eyes were wet.

"These two," he said, vague so that they would not understand that he spoke of them. "They should stay here. With us. Your momma..."

He shook his head. He could only imagine her heartbreak, whether it was betrayal or true loss in the end. Valiant, unwilling, had chosen to believe the best of Ariadne.

She was not coming home.

"They'll do better with the girls to distract them," was his quiet conclusion. He wished his voice was not trembling, but he mourned already for their poor spirits. For Ariadne. For their family.
