The snow reached up to her hocks, and there was a deeper chill the further north they traveled. Still, they continued; for this place seemed promising. They encountered few wolf-scents, and had come across no packs nor pack wolves. She peered over her shoulder at Aditya, flashing a grin as she slowed. The heavyweight of illness seemed to have lifted off her these past few days, and no longer did she have to suppress the odd hacking cough, nor was her sleep interrupted.
Spring was coming; she saw it in the gradual lengthening of the days, and yet it was hard to see it anywhere else. The prey had yet to return, and while she had seen a flicker of red she'd hoped desperately to be a robin, they had seen little else that might symbolize that spring was on the horizon. In fact, another cold snap had descended, and the cold and the damp seeped into her bones; her plush pelt nearing its limits. The snow crunched as they made their own trail through the untouched white, Dawn slowing and drawing up alongside her companions after a beat. "hungry?"
They ought to be able to make a kill. The rocky plains that reminded her, somewhat, of the Cuesta, were crisscrossed with trails, most half-enveloped by snow. Still, she'd seen the odd fresh markings, and hunger was beginning to gnaw at her once more.

Easy, too, was reminded of the lands of her youth. "Is this the Cuesta?" she asked, tail wagging uncertainly. She had the strangest notion that Khoe might appear, although she was not sure she'd recognize the woman if she appeared. She hardly even remembered the summer, although she had vague memories of not knowing what the winter would be like. Now, it seemed that her knowledge had reversed. It seemed as though all she'd ever known was winter. She was eager to see green grasses once more.
"I could eat a whole deer by myself," she proclaimed, eager to get down to the business of hunting. She looked between her brother and sister, hoping this meant they'd be stopping for a rest. She could go a lot further than she'd been able to when Daddy took them to Easthollow, but her stamina did not yet match up to Dawn's.

the farther north they went, aditya grew more and more displeased. leaving the coast had been the first strike--he had so enjoyed their short foray by the sea--and as the land grew colder and more barren, the burly male found himself filled with an emotion somewhat like regret.
not that he was terribly unhappy, at least with his traveling companions. how could he be? he had enjoyed the company immensely. but his thin pelt barely kept him warm down at the plateau; up here, above the mountain range, the icy wind cut through his fur like claws, and with no trees or brush to block the gusts, he was always utterly exposed.
dawn came to a halt and looked back at him with a smile. aditya grinned at easy's admission, nodding in turn. "as could i," he assured her, his gaze returning to his mate's face. "you've picked up a trail?" he asked--half-rhetorically, for he also had seen markings here and there, caught the odd scent on the wind.
