Sea Lion Shores What immortal hand or eye

There was something about the smell in the air that drew Niamh to the coastline and away from the lands which were far more familiar to her. The wind seemed to get stronger and stronger the closer she got, and the smell on the air wasn't altogether unpleasant, but still kind of...Off. Not like something she'd eat, or something that had gone rotten, but just...Different, and she couldn't quite place it. Having never seen the ocean before, and having never really been told much about it, she was quite awestruck when she finally broke free of the closed, forested wilderness and looked out over an endless body of water. 

It smelled very strongly of whatever it was it smelled of; she couldn't get over how much water there was, and she'd seen some fairly large lakes- but nothing like this. Maybe the water was marshy, and that's why it smelled off- but it looked much deeper than marsh waters...She tried to piece things together but her thoughts were interrupted by a low, rumbling sound, which drew her eyes down the shoreline to a sight that made her pause for a moment- before she began to laugh out loud. 

Unable to believe her eyes, she bounded forward toward the sandy beach, and leapt atop a boulder to look down the beach at the large, oddly shaped things that were making rumbly noises at one another, but not moving very much. They had no hind legs- and not really front legs either- they looked more like sturdy fish fins than anything. There was something strange about the shape of their heads as well- glistening, beady black eyes that were almost too close together, and a heavily whiskered but short snout. She could see canines in their mouths, which indicated they were meat eaters- but why would something so aquatic-looking come up on the shore?

She continued to laugh and dipped into a play bow. "Hey, hey you!" she called out, hoping to get some attention, but she was all but ignored. "Hey! Legless...Fat-dogs! What are you?" She called out again, amidst a good belly laugh. She settled her hind end down again, and continued to chuckle as she watched the sea lions basking in the sun on the shore. She set her head on her paws, and started scheming...Just how close could she get to one of those things?
