had @Hex become like the old crone she knew?

she doubted such, but she needed to know. needed to see. some part of her broke free from her detachment and came back to earth.

she brought him meat as a sort of offering. it felt lacking for her taste, but she did not know what else to bring. furs? shining things? perhaps a bone should have been offered. maybe she might still be able to rummage him a valuable one, if she saw something in his golden gaze.

her pace was quick after his freshest trail.

It wasn't long before they met upon the trail.

Golden Eagle, he greeted the woman. The snow was falling in earnest at this altitude, swirling around them in the slight breeze. It landed in glimmering spangles upon his dark pelt, giving him a silvery, almost wizened appearance before her.

He nodded toward the fresh meat, brows lifted in query. What is this? he asked. Not that he didn't appreciate the gesture—if it was a gesture of some kind—but why?

Does she not think me capable of feeding myself?

The thought wound itself around his heart like thin, icy limbs, locking the core of him in sickly embrace. If he did not have her trust, what did he have?

who carried more magick?

in that moment she did not know and it was enough to plant a seed of fearful respect. it is respect to bring a seer a gift before you ask them questions. her good eye gleamed with something worshipful.

i have known only one other, but maybe i have come to see the birth of another.

she spoke with respect and she offered a brief lowering of her head.

His expression changed at her words, shifting from wary to wondrous. This was a token of respect and honor. Hex gave her a grateful, solemn nod, murmuring his thanks and taking the meat from her. . .but setting it aside, for now.

What questions do you have? he asked Golden Eagle, settling down upon his haunches, looking expectant. . .and perhaps a bit guarded. He knew her strongest loyalties rested with Muskrat, and he knew more that the two could bring him down, easily.

This place's legitimacy rested upon their shoulders; that was never in doubt.
