When Caiaphas rounded the boulder all hellfire and calamitous, the male recoiled -- and the several steps that he placed between them caused her blazing malice to slightly recede. She slowed to a trot and lifted her chin up haughtily, the harsh ridge of hackles along her spiny back still uplifted in tameless rifts.

He did nothing to reciprocate her act of aggression, and she regarded the agouti male coldly, the conch all but forgotten. She did not advance any further, but her body language stated clearly he was not allowed to come any further.

"You tred close to the Sisters' enclave. State your business, rube." She spoke with great courage and conviction -- and to an outsider it may have been a comical sight; the lanky, wispy little wretch seemed almost too skeletal and scraggy to bear any real threat.
