The man recanted what he'd said; perhaps it was something Kigipigak took too seriously, as he was protective of his small village and those who had proven loyal to his family. He did not visibly relax while Void spoke, but his mind softened a touch to the idea of having another hunter and protector among their number.

Only, Kigipigak remained resolute on the nature of his village. He followed the law that was taught to him by his mother, who learned from generations of strong-willed Tartok wolves. This was knowledge he now imparted to Void.

In following the traditions of my people, it is expected that our Issumatar—my wife, and our leader—is the only one with the right to continue her bloodline. That answered his question. As I said, if you are interested in finding a wife of your own, there are other places to look. We are not a place for match-making. Not until his sons were older and such a match was appropriate for them.

Kigipigak was quiet a moment after that. He considered what this man could offer Natigvik as well as the threat he might pose, given time to live among them and learn their ways. Void was no child. He also held an injury, which spoke either to prowess as a hunter or recklessness of spirit, and Kigipigak was not sure if he was willing to have such a man near his children.

If you are serious about finding a home with us, I would tell you to prove yourself first. This was not something he'd extended to Cerne, or to Amalia, but neither of these amaguk had made him cast any doubt the way Void did. Is this something you would be willing to do?
