The mood in the air lifted as the two partners found sanctuary in the promise of their recommitment to one another. They did not waste another breath on the unhelpable Cedar Sweep wolves. Instead, they redirected their energy to a more pleasing topic.

Meerkat seemed smitten by the idea. “You’re fluent, like a native islander,” Njord commended as he returned her kiss with his own. “When you say a thing like that tae me… well, it tells me ye love every part of who I am.” Njord’s expression softened and he felt seen and appreciated.

Then, his eyes drifted to the small stack of stones that marked Narwhal’s resting place. He fell into a lapse of companionable silence and simply enjoyed the moment beside his wife. His vow would not only be for Meerkat, Njord knew, but also for their children: present, dispersed, or departed.
