where water was, minne was.

she had found the lake after a dry spell in her travels, a sudden well of relief in her for it. the sun high and hot today and the height of the mountains seemed to help little with it all. she kept to shadows until she came to the edge of the lake.

she waded in without second thought, swimming out some in a slow doggy-paddle manner — for she was dog, after all.

she failed to notice the arrival of any other canines or beasts. focused solely on the soft ripples of the lake and any fish that may swim by.

It had taken a great deal of effort to move to the lake. Once the dark figure had arrived there, he had found peace at the edge of the water where his paws could be wetted, and his heart could cease the rapid beating that had carried him there.

Crowfeather had been working to improve his strength on three legs. He had walked every day since he had found the strength to stand. To reach the lake had been his furthest feat yet. It had only shown him that he still had time left in his recovery. He would need to remain in Mereo for another moon or two, building more of his abilities from scratch. The shadow feared that he would not know how to hunt for himself with only three limbs.

There was a swimmer in the water that drew the young man’s eye. They looked like they were enjoying themselves basking in the cool lake under the heat of the sun. Crowfeather chuffed out a greeting and offered a nervous shake of his tail.

tall, battish ears turned back. her head followed in this motion to where she saw them. dark and lean and —

missing a limb. she wondered where he was from to survive such a thing. it wasn't unheard of but...surely it made the journey of life all the harder.

carefully, she paddled back towards shore where she would pull herself free of the water. it would be here she would rumble warmly to him. welcoming his presence tentatively. she peered with brown eyes at him, watching his body language.

The swimmer approached him. Crowfeather shifted nervously where he waited. With the warmth of the summer air at his back, he thought the depths of the cool lake water seemed magical. It seemed that the other wolf had enjoyed themselves, at least.

When they had drawn nearer to him, the shadow waved his tail softly. He did not want to intrude on their peace, but he had been left in the tablinum within Mereo for some time with only minimal visits from members of Germanicus’ pack. Crowfeather was shocked to find that he missed having company. He had found himself thinking of Gucci in his time alone. He hoped that the little figure was well.

Hello, the shadow offered in a gentle voice. It's a good day for a swim. Ears splayed on his head. Crowfeather wondered if he would ever swim again.

he was warm, a welcome relief from odd loners and jagged strangers. for this she looked upon him with some soft sense of fondness.

it is, isn't it? her eyes squinted some as she looked towards the sky. the sun wishing to warm her further and dry her of the water that clung to her still. she would bake further but that was okay. she could return to the lake when this was all done.

she wondered if it was rude to think he might be here to swim too. could he safely swim?

what brings you to the lake?

a safer question.

The woman seemed nice. Crowfeather eased at the edge of the lake and watched her with a small smile on his features.

She agreed that the water was good on that warm summer day. The shadow imagined joining her. The thought chased goosebumps along his skin. He could hardly walk to the lake let alone attempting to swim. Perhaps when he had found his strength again. In time, he hoped that he would get used to missing his leg. Crowfeather did not want to be awkward and clumsy for the rest of his days. He wanted to hunt again, to fish, to swim in the lakes and rivers.

I thought I could wade in the water for a while. I haven’t been able to travel much and it was too nice to pass up.

Crowfeather wished to know more about the woman in the water.

Where do you travel from, if you don’t mind me asking?
