They had embraced briefly in the settling of the camps- but in all the excitement, she’d eventually lost sight of her son who belonged, now, to another pack. Amid the scent of his own pelt, now changed by freshwater and saltless air, was the scent of Arric- and she realized with a burn in her cheeks that it was entirely possible that Etienne and Suzu, by some stroke of chance, had ended up living with the freshwater man.
She sought him out again, carefully- not wanting to cross the man’s path lest he seek retribution for the flogging that Mireille had given him. But rather than finding the gigantic man, she found first his daughter- one of two girls they had created together- and her son, and-
She’d nearly begun jogging when she saw Chani with Etienne, so she could embrace both of her children and squeeze them together against her chest, but then she saw the very small, pale child at Etienne’s side.
Her stride faltered and she felt her eyes well with tears. As much as she wanted to grab her son and hold him close, she did not want to spook the darling little girl who made her heart beat wildly.
She attempted to speak, but all that came out was a wavering whimper. She’d elected not to speak recently, but her emotions simmered so wildly within her that her voice fled from her like a hare coursing from a hound. There was a lift at the end of her stammered vocalization- a plea to be introduced to who she hoped was a granddaughter of hers.

It can be assumed that if Chacal is speaking, she will be singing. Her speaking patterns will always have a melodic quality to them.
