This silence was worse than just about anything. Fennec had no clues to Towhee's reaction to the news but she didn't imagine it was positive. This wasn't good news. She was dropping a bomb and hoping for as small an explosion as possible, but she knew one was coming.

She needed to sit down. Fennec rocked back and sat on her haunches, lowering her head again with a look of absolute dread settling about her. She was so caught up in it that she almost missed her mom's remarks entirely, and when she did hear them, she thought maybe she'd missed something after all.

Yeah. There was little to no enthusiasm in her voice. Over the past few weeks she'd given herself no room to be happy about this and she wasn't about to start now. Right now Fennec could see no good outcomes from this 'mistake'.
