She tread water, turning to face the shore, rising with the bob of each wave as easily as a seabird.

Lucette stepped into the waters, and Chacal smiled faintly; it warmed her heart to see some of the youth accept the sea into their lives. As tied as it was to their habits and traditions, she hoped that the children would never quarrel with it- not the way hers had.

She invited Lucette into the calmer, deeper waters where the waves did not crest.
