Anselm expected countersiege. That was his first mistake, assuming children would behave in a manner consistent with order. 

His jaw dropped as Gideon did a 180 and threw himself in a gallop away. For something tiny and burdened with short legs, that boy ran fast. 

Shit. Anselm lurched to his feet, but by the time he’d gathered all four back under him Gideon had disappeared in the underbrush. Ana was somewhere nearby, thankfully — giving Anselm some relief. 

He lowered his head and followed Gideon’s scent, making show of heavy footsteps so the boy would hear him coming. Better run before Papa catches you, Anslem play growled as he pursued his boy through the woods. 

Later, he would show Gideon and Ezra how to hunt frogs along the river.
