Perhaps that was why Teya's advances went unmet; he did not read the intention within her gaze or take as much pleasure in her luring as another might. His thoughts were on his family, and so far Towhee had been the only person on the planet to find their way in to his heart.

They had shared so much, he thought. Reyes thought it had been enough. She had been his first (among women) and the one he had chosen for himself (which was again, a first; never before had Reyes been given a choice in love). Now that things had gone awry he wondered — had he been wrong? 

Perhaps he wasn't meant for love like this.

Brecheliant. Reyes reiterated, so as not to forget. I'll remember.

A moment of thought before Reyes realizes — And your name?

the name of her home, held in his mouth. it reminded teya that she had yet to return, for her tasks had been abandoned and the borders demanded far more patrols than she was able to do now.
"i teya," she said softly, knowing that along the way she would pause to amuse herself with another soul.
"you?" she would want to know the title of the one who grappled with so much beside this river.

Teya. It suited her.

Reyes. He said, flashing a small roguish smile, the kind he used to harbor when he ran with a crew; but his heart wasn't in it. It was good to meet you.

He would stay by the water for a while yet. This place was home for him until he gathered enough courage (or anger, whichever came more readily to him) and moved to confront his wife.

she was disappointed but not disheartened. a sly nod greeted reyes' words; a grin; and then the girl was off, cutting a sauntering path on a very roundabout road to brecheliant.
it had been her turn to travel with bridget, after all, but now it seemed as though they would not have that chance. teya wanted a distraction, but it would not be in the stunning scarlet man.
