She was getting tired, but for some reason, she could not stop. Not until Meerkat came and caused her attention to snap upwards, breaking whatever spell the sand had on her. For a moment she was disoriented, then she was surprised.

You aren't blind, she said, more as a statement than a question, staring at Meerkat intently. Her fur was the same, not counting the patterned difference, but her eyes were wrong. She had imagined the girl was dead by now.

She gave no further explanation than that and seemed to be waiting for something from Meerkat instead.
