"Fuck," Bat muttered under her breath, staring down at her banded foreleg in disbelief, "my fucking life." They had died and come back to life (metaphorically speaking), then made it almost all the way back home... just for her to step on a stone the wrong way and break her fucking ankle? She'd tried to shake it off, ignore it, pretend she hadn't heard or felt that tiny, excruciating snap! But Bat had only made it a few feet before she'd dropped.
A look of pained resignation crawled across her face, especially when she lifted her eyes to find @Tegan and saw the snowflakes falling faster and thicker than ever. "Hey, mother fucker!" she shouted, now twisting her head to take in their craggy backdrop. "Where'd you go? Get your ass back here!" They were on the far side of the Sunspires now; if she squinted through the flurries, she could see the flat lands sprawling below. The Barriers rose up like a shadow in the far distance, practically obscured by the snowfall.
Bat sighed, her breath gusting out of her in a visible white brume. She really hoped Tegan hadn't gone full derp and wandered off, leaving her here all alone.

She liked to come up here to look at the forest. Maegi knew she shouldn't—that she should just leave it all behind. The past was past, and her future within Diaspora.
But she couldn't resist.
Hey, mother fucker! The hollered curse cut through the snow (Maegi had been just about to head back for lack of a clear view down). Confused, she followed the yelling to its source, a lanky dark girl who appeared to be in some sort of pain.

Where are you hurt?she asked, cutting right to the chase. Better to get her to Mahler and his healing skills sooner rather than later.

Something moved out there in what had quickly become a whiteout. Bat turned eagerly in that direction, thirsting for Tegan's familiar features, and actually recoiled in surprise when a pale stranger emerged from the heavy snowflakes. Bat's eyes bounced from the notched ear to the macabre smile and finally landed on the clubbed foot. They went wide before zinging back to the woman's face.
Her laconic query demanded an equally concise answer. "Uh, I—it's my ankle." Her silver eyes strayed to the backward paw again. "I rolled it. Think I broke the damn thing." Meanwhile, this stranger's looked like it had gone to a real banger and gotten turnt, like, literally. "Are you a doctor?" she asked. 'Cause ya' look like a serial killer. She glanced surreptitiously over one slim shoulder for any sign of Tegan but the snowfall was so thick now, she couldn't see more than a foot or two. Gulp.

Maegi was not at all a fan of the way the girl looked at her—made her less inclined to be helpful, actually—but it was what it was. By now, she should have been used to it.
Enter a young man, bristling and defensive. If Maegi hadn't been in such a hurry to usher Mou out of the forest when the Redhawks had come, she might have known him. For now, he was just a nameless companion. . .someone in the way.
Her eyes flickered between the two of them, quietly appraising.
I'm not a doctor, she said, shaking her head.
But the leader of my pack is. I can take—

Her ankle is hurt,Maegi responded, heaving a sigh.
I was telling her that my pack leader is a medic; if she's able to walk, I can bring her down to the hollow, or if not, I can summon him here.Yes, another thing on Mahler's plate. She was sure he'd really appreciate that.
Her eyes flickered between the two of them, quietly appraising.
Where are you two from?she asked.

Tegan finally came flapping onto the scene like a windblown bird, which wasn't all that inaccurate. Bat felt immediate relief, both for herself and for him. What if her beloved idiot had meandered off and gotten lost in a snowstorm, with her stuck here and unable to go looking for him...? The thought tied an ice cold knot in the middle of her chest.
While she struggled suddenly to breathe, the stranger answered Tegan's question with a benevolent patience the two of them frankly hadn't done anything to deserve. Bat suddenly felt bad for her snap judgments, though at least she'd kept them to herself—er, minus that initial recoil, which had been about her unexpected appearance as much as her... unexpected... appearance...
"We're not from anywhere, really. We're rangers," Bat replied. That was the honest truth. "I don't wanna make you guys walk up and down a mountain in this. My friend here can help me down the mountain. He owes me for all the times I've looked after his ass." She motioned Tegan closer with her good paw, deftly slipping a quick sign in there: -Real names?-
Turning back to pale she-wolf, Bat smiled cheerfully and said, "So." She almost clapped her paws together but, thank fuck, she remembered at the last second. "Where're we headed? Where's your pack, what's your name, all'a that?" As she spoke, she climbed to her feet, careful to keep her broken foreleg lifted off the ground.
She actually made a show out of arranging herself beside Tegan, even turning her back on their helper for a moment to whisper, "C'mon, let's go with her. I don't think we have any choice, I really bitched it up." Bat dangled her crooked leg before swinging into place beside Tegan, pressing against his warmth, and looking expectantly and gratefully at their escort through the thickly tumbling snow.

tegan was about to bust out that they were from the redhawks, but bat quickly responded before his dumbass had a chance to mess anything up... her answer was more accurate right now anyway. he shot a glare at his lover as she mentioned that shed looked after his ass plenty of times before. well at least he'd only drowned and come back to life once. she'd done it twice. oh well, anyway -- oh shit she was signing to him.
-you wanna go with this bitch?? -- you can't tough it out til we get back to the caldera? raven's probably still there, i feel like she's gonna eat us.- he signed back, but he knew as she was dangling it in front of him that that was probably a bad idea. and there was no way in hell she'd make it. an audible sigh. -fine. but i don't like it.- he glanced back towards the weird wolf.
tristan,he said out loud in response to the ugly ass wolf in front of him -- after bat had asked all her questions, anyway. which were quite a few.

i've got her,he confirmed with a dip of his head, and added,
thanks.but he didn't mean it much.

She didn't quite buy it. Everyone was from somewhere. But she acquiesced anyway, having no heart to fight it. At least the young woman was beginning to warm up; her companion remained quite stilted. And they were. . .they were—
"What is she doing? Why was she making those movements?"
"Tawging."
Maegi froze abruptly in place, blood going cold as her mind brought her back to the tunnel and the strange dialogue between Mou and the Redhawk girl. She hadn't seen anything like it before, nor had she since. Until now. Her eyes lingered upon their fleeting gestures for a moment before returning to their faces, flickering back and forth.
She dipped her muzzle in reply to Tristan's thanks, a wordless acceptance. Wordless because she was, in fact, speechless, the wheels of her mind moving overtime. What to do, what to do?!

Maegi,she responded coolly,
from Diaspora. It's just down the mountain.Could she warn Mou in time? It might just be a coincidence, but it wasn't a risk she was willing to take. While Mahler was tending to the girl, she could slip away. . .

Bat frowned at Tegan's question, not because she most certainly couldn't tough out something this painful but because he said "caldera." Sometimes, when he mixed up details like this, she really worried for him. She knew he was probably concussed but what if there was permanent damage? He's already improved a lot, she reminded herself, totally forgetting to answer him.
He had acquiesced and their hostess looked ready to begin moving. Bat blinked a few times, totally missing Maegi's pause but, thankfully, not her response. "Yes, thank you, Maegi," she echoed Tegan as they began a slow and painful shuffle forward. "I'm Rory, by the way. I'd say it's nice to meet you but, uh..." She huffed a dry laugh, squinting through the flurrying snow.
"Damn. This is gonna be a real bitch, isn't it," Bat asked without inflection, pressing closer to Tegan as they began the descent. She lapsed into silence after that, concentrating on keeping Maegi in sight and not slipping, falling and breaking another ankle.

I know you've been busy with the move, so I figured we could push this toward a fade? :)
