in her own chambers, Toula moved the pieces on the Senet board in silence. she played this game by herself for hours, thinking and playing now with the brain of Makono.
remembering a bull. remembering blood. remembering mother and father, and their beautiful wedding day—but in the center of it all had always been Makono.
it had only occurred to her with the news of Khusobek that she might be being played by the men of the palace. that her eyes must truly be open. the Gods brought her this knowledge, and they asked even more of her yet.
she wondered, once, why Makono had wanted to be Pharaoh at all. and now she knew it was not for desire, but for necessity. to not have it in the hand of any other man, perhaps. Makono, so much wiser than she was so early on!
but dead, surely. two Queens, two Pharaohs.
and what would she die as? Toula thought, as her aunt did, of her own afterlife. and as she finished the game, her expression was grim. the Gods would soon tell her what she must do—They always did, regardless of whether or not she wished to hear it.
