so enthralled was he with the smoothness of the dance he led that merrick did not immediately notice nunataq's predicament. the scent of blood rose metallic in the air, infusing him with a rigorous sense of accomplishment. his sister struck, and then he did again, this time opening a wound along the beast's shoulder.
the stag bellowed, using his depleted strength to aim a rough shoulder at nunataq. then, merrick saw the slipping of her paws, the way her jaws strained along the hide, and dashed forward. 
with luck, before the stag targeted them with a blow, he would bury his own teeth near nunataq's, and drag the animal sideways into the mire.
