when heda's eyes opened and she at last returned to herself, to rivenwood, to the day;
to the pair of sucking mouths at her belly, the sons who had been born at dawn. 
mother's breath exhaled over the pair as she sniffed at them, exploring the details she had not seen before. the first boy was flame-headed already, and she smiled in spite of herself to see this little tribute to her own pelt.
the second was a darkstone boy, and heda spent a moment longer with him, investigating the tiny nostrils, the miniscule paws, the pair of tails —
tails?
she looked again, if just to be sure. yes. two tails.
for a long time, heda stared at them, and then her son, altogether otherwise normal. 
the mother chose not to panic, realizing firstly that she had no energy for it, and secondly that she did not fear. god had changed him in the womb, was all.
"ezra," she murmured dreamily over the red-naped boy. a moment of contemplation, and then she bestowed "gideon" upon the second child, favoring him with another long, thoughtful look.
curling herself around the boys, heda let herself sleep again, unaware of the rage that stirred in dinah.
