All Welcome
There’s a problem.
These arms and legs don’t work anymore.
The den doesn’t comfort, it offers up one little grayish pup in the palms of it’s shale-hands to a leviathan that peeks around the corner, moon-eyes glinting in the dead of night.

Little boys must have the decency to stay quiet or demons will gobble them whole, bones and all.

Not a squeak, he mustn't make a peep!
Hungry jaws creep closer, they hover over him, casting a long dark shadow over the whole of the sleeping family. And fear seeps in, enough to shoot their most docile child into the air and awaken the entire island with Judah’s first word:

AAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!”
I will carry cross and song where I don't belong

He dreamt he was flying.

Seagull wings carried him higher, plunged him lower, danced him through the splash of many waves. He laughed, rolled, twirled through the air. The rocks rose around him, but the gulls navigated him through every one.

Narrow misses here and there, but the thrill of life, of wind in his fur, made Simeon laugh and laugh.

The gulls, too! Their eyes were like starlight and one by one they carried his siblings to fly alongside him. Dinah laughed and touched the clouds, which became sunbeams undertow. Malakai tried to roar at them like he’d done to Gramma Twee, but the clouds roared back, and Simeon laughed at that!

He looked about for Judah, but the flurry of wings hid him away, and instead, a small voice rose up and filled the air.

It started so quiet, until it turned into a wail.

aaaaaammmMMMIIIIIIII!!

The seagulls dropped, and darkness pierced the light. Simeon woke with a snort and a start, a jerk of his head upward.

And the screaming did not fade.

Juju! he snapped right around and pushed his paws against his brother to shake him awake, shh shh shh, wass wrong, wass wrong?

With a frantic glance he looked about to see if anyone else had woken up — but he couldn’t tell, only assumed they must have, and he switched his attention back to his brother in a harried attempt to comfort him.

Someone in her dream was screaming.
It'd been peaceful up until now! She was on the beach with Mama and Daddy, chasing a flock of songbirds that were so close, but every time she swiped a paw at one, it flapped its wings once more. A frustrating sight, but not nearly so bad until one of them opened its weathered beak and started screaming:

AAAAAAAAAMMMMMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

And it wouldn't stop! It felt like an alarm, and a rush of panic swept over her little body. Frantically, she tried yelling, Stop! Stop! Stop! but nothing made it cease.
And in the real world, her little paws twitched and little grunts and whines left her lips.
Waving her paws wildly in front of the birds, they droned on and on and on and on and on—

It was not the birds who were screaming. When she awoke, she was greeted with the familiar scratch of Judah's voice in her ears, and Simeon's hushed urges for him to calm down. Quick to action, Dinah stumbles closer while her eyes adjusted to the darkness. Simmy? her mousy little voice comes out in a whisper, coming down to a crouch and laying her head upon Judah's shoulder, a worried, wide-eyed gaze cast to Simeon. She didn't like it when he cried.
Juuuuudahhhhh, she sings to him the way Mama would; if it made her feel better, surely it would help him, right? Except she didn't really know any songs, much less the words to them, and so she settles for humming a tune. Maybe he would listen to her voice instead of whatever was going on in his head.

Thrust from the vision his body extorts in the darkness, shivering beneath Sim’s paw and Din’s little head that presses warmly against him with song.

Behind you!

He shrieks but it merely presents in a round of wordless yowls. You see it too?

A heart is rampant in his chest but his brother and sister’s eyes gleam like the pair of lighthouses they always were, calling him into harbor from the rough waters of his mind, and this night from the illusions spun by it.

He breathes again, the creature is gone. Now it is only Dinny and Sim, and his wide face staring back in their reflection. He watches them and his paws shoot forward in the dark, reaching, grasping for something tangible: Dinny’s paw and Simmy’s cheek.
