something was happening to skaigona.
the waning light of day auraed the girl as she lay among the ashstones, high in the tumbled cliffs. the others would know where she was. skaigona did not intend to disappear like worripa had.
mama, gone. brother, gone.
at her pale paws, the miserable remains of the little creature that skaigona had intended to be her bracelet.
where was druid? off with witch, surely.
for the first time, she felt resentment worm its way into the base of her heart. why would worripa leave her with no one?
skaigona watched the darkening began to reach toward rivenwood, and realized that she felt nothing.
the inside of her chest was velveteen black.
skaigona drew a breath that hurt.
praimfaya. worripa. skaigona.
they all sounded the same. she tasted salt along her lips and realized she was crying, but when she licked her own tears, skaigona tasted only dust from her mad flight into the rock.
something was happening, and it was a fracture running along the fault-line of belonging.
hedda.
it inched up from consciousness, and she saw that its sound belonged both to the doctor's language and to a memory she had not explored —
heda
"heda."
the girl closed her eyes and was swept into the unbroken darkness of a relieved sleep.
