it was not a wolf he recognized that approached now. mahler watched the small dark figure detach itself from the details of swiftcurrent and approach. another woman, her scent still intriguing enough to make his nostrils flare. unfriendly in her tone, in the stance of her diminutive body, she set herself against him. 
mahler gave a curious swing of his ears forward. "i vas following one of my volves," he replied softly. she was not unpleasant to look upon, but out of courtesy he did not appraise her features. it was good that swiftcurrent now had such fierce guardians; he could not remember it happening when he lived in the creek, outside of himself and the she-dragon.
