All Welcome
Chacal hummed; an unbroken melody that floated on the wind, rising and falling with each gale as though she were merely a musical instrument being fed by the briny breeze. It thrummed her heartstrings, merely because her wordless melody did not seem to be suffering any deterioration, unlike her spoken words.

Even the thought of speaking, of singing, made the muscles jump in her jaw, and brought a light hoarseness to her voice that she worked through with a breath.

She reflected on her affliction, and found herself remembering the quiet man who lived on the Rise- his gentle features and playful demeanour, and how he had always managed to communicate without the use of words. She thought of Augur, the mountain boulder- and decided to pay his pack a visit, carrying a seaweed sling full of urchins with her as a gift.
It can be assumed that if Chacal is speaking, she will be singing. Her speaking patterns will always have a melodic quality to them.

The absence of wolves in the Fengtooth ranks meant Moon Runner became a jack of all trades.

She hunted and patroled. Watched and guarded.

There was no room for redundencies within the pack.

She heard a new sound. It was like birdsong.

She loped through the dappled shadows from the safety behind the Rise’s borders until she came across a mature she-wolf, carrying something alien in her mouth.

Moon Runner chuffed, voice curt, as she emerged from the foliage. The girl was young, and though she had witnessed the art of diplomacy, it was not yet a skill she had refined. She was on edge and made herself stand taller than she felt.

State your business, her spirit said.

She heard the rustling of undergrowth, and inhaled the scent of a young, female wolf of her Rise before she set eyes upon her. A momentary pause bought her enough time to note the woman’s appearance, the shine of amber in her gaze and the cross-stitch of brown fur mixed in with the pale.

She pushed her whiskers forward as she lowered her head in deference, and smiled gently when she found the scent she’d been hoping to catch.

Augur.

Her tail waved at the realization that this woman was familiar by way of her heritage. Her ears flicked back in subtle, friendly deference, and she crooned a note with a voice that could barely carry words. With a light stutter, she inquired:

A-a-a-a-augu-r.
It can be assumed that if Chacal is speaking, she will be singing. Her speaking patterns will always have a melodic quality to them.

A small part of Moon Runner hoped this woman was a dispersal seeking a new start at the Rise. No wolves occupied their Fengtooth ranks and she thought it would be advantageous to have an experience, mature wolf among their ranks.

Yet, as soon as their saline-fringed scent wafted to Moon Runner’s nose, she knew this one to be Sapphiquian like Dry Creek [Chani] and Oak Leaf [Sobeille].

Dry Creek, in particular, had befriended the pale Trēow. Their friendship surmounted Moon Runner’s instinctual adversity to outsiders. This fact helped reduce her suspicion of the dark outsider, evident by the softening of the gleam in her amber eyes.

Goldfinch, thought Moon Runner, unaware that Wise Father had, too, chosen the moniker for Chacal. The iconic contrast of black and gold in her furs, and the melody in her voice was reminiscent of the brightly feathered songbird.

The woman acted respectful. Friendly. As if she was an old friend.

Moon Runner was perplexed by this, oblivious that they had met Wise Father [Augur]… and unfortunately his name in the common tongue would inspire no reaction from Moon Runner. Spoken language had no footing, here.

She approached Goldfinch with her ears forward, as if asking to share scent. Then, her eyes glanced down to the odd things the salt-wolf had brought.

The sound had been a murmur, uttered only once; she imitated it as best she could, with the understanding that she might lack the nuances to properly speak the name the man had given her.

In the woman’s eyes, Chacal saw kindness; in her soft breaths, she heard an invitation and with the flattening of her ears and licking of her lips she agreed to share space and invite scent trading.

She was not surprised to catch Augur’s scent upon the young woman; and a brief study of her features brought a smile to Chacal’s face, while she held still, soft puffs of breath fanning across Moon Runner’s fair cheek.

Y-y-your ffffff-at’er. She said warmly, bobbing her head gently as if to reiterate her request.

She could not help the pining, wistful creature that grew within her chest and played upon her heartstrings; a man who had once been a friend, who could have been more than just such a thing had she not been so selfish in wanting both the mountain boulder and the troubadour.
It can be assumed that if Chacal is speaking, she will be singing. Her speaking patterns will always have a melodic quality to them.

Moon Runner acted respectfully as she shared scent with the saltwolf. Notes of Dry Creek and Oak Leaf were present among the golden hairs of the stranger’s mantle – and other’s too. But most of all, was the overpowering aroma of the coast. A place Moon Runner only knew by smell and not sight.

The woman lingered and this gave Moon Runner pause. She wanted something. Someone.

An ear twisted in thought. Then, Moon Runner loped away to find Wise Father, @Mountain Boulder. Surely, he would know what their neighbor desired.

goldfinch.

he remembered here, returning with his daughter to set eyes on the woman of obsidian and gold. a woof bounced loudly across the short grass; he met her with a curiosity in him and a delight to the way his ears slid back in a friendly manner.

her scent, taken; was all well in her home of seaside cliffs and ocean?

he snuffled at the bundle of urchins, exploring them too.
