His lips tightened when he felt the inaudible stir of tension in her throat. To be fair, she had every reason to be defensive. She’d been judged abruptly when she’d been found close to the borders, and now she was returning the same skepticism.

He squinted faintly, though, and glanced back to her with something like regret in his eyes when she spoke. ”Saving them?” He asked, slowly. He suspected she’d have an excuse, or an explanation, but he wasn’t the one who needed it and it was in the past, now. ”Look. I’m sorry if someone misread the situation, but I hope you understand…Those’re someone’s kids, and you were a stranger, right at our territory. Parents sometimes…” The pinch of tension slipped from his shoulders, his tone and features gentled. He spotted Killdeer beating a path toward them, and he smiled faintly as he watched his son approach. ”Parents sometimes get irrational about their kids,” He uttered quietly, his lips barely moving. He was keen on not having his son witness another conflict. He hoped that that explanation would serve as somewhat of an apology.

It made him proud to see that unlike both the other wolves present, his first instinct was to diffuse and make peace. He warmed to his son’s touch, and uttered a fond growl. ”Hey Varmint,” He greeted his son, with a tone he hoped would settle his concerns.

His brow raised at his introduction. ”Always knew I was the cool parent.” He commented. His eyes flicked to the woman, when their relationship was called into question. He inhaled. He didn’t feel the situation needed any more mediation, and it certainly wasn’t Killdeer’s job to be his father’s keeper. He gave her a brief, wry smile.  ”Not really, no,” he confessed. ”We’ve met before, but you know how sometimes your Dad makes a poor first impression.” He said. He gestured to Killdeer. ”You won’t have to worry about him being trouble in your pack, though. Killdeer here managed to get only the good genes.”
