this was the end.
she had not gone back to brecheliant; she had remained behind in the sunspire. the ravenwing darkness and the broad belt of starlight had provided much for them to discuss as their travel came to a close.
she had not seen sundance since their parting in the sunspire, but if he wished to follow, then follow he could. and yet he knew perhaps now her heart belonged with the one who waited. if he joined them, it was to be a faerie in a court farflung, but her spirit could not silver with his own.
and it was in her eyes, this truth, glorious and painful, when she looked at bridget for a time she hoped was not last. if bronte meant to come with her, then with open arms she welcomed her daughter, her handsome son who might have followed at the last.
elsewise that last day was spent in contemplation, in play, in joy, and at last in the sorrow of parting.
she told them where to find the fjord.
she lingered with bridget a moment longer, refusing to weep.
and then teya turned toward the glowing sun and did not allow herself a moment's look back, lest she crumble and return to ghosts, return to the heart from which she did not wish to flee.
happiness had its price, and hers scorched the corners of her soul.

Bronte's time at the raven guarded cliffs had come to an end. Being there, with Teya, Bridget, Ponyboy and perhaps even Sundance had renewed her. Lifted her spirit. Filled her with a new and strange kind of strength she had never been capable of before.

She was ready to move on.

Somewhere, way across the miles of mountains and valleys, lay her birthplace. Home to great joys and tragedies. She had accepted that that part of her life was over. Ahead, new pages lay waiting to be turned. The spike of sorrow that cut through her heart was brief but profound. She shut her eyes against it.

And opened them again, healed. As Teya set off, Bronte followed. Like her mother, she did not look back. Instead, she only raced, headlong into the sun. She felt Bronco's spirt with her, right by her side. Even Boris too, wherever he may be now.

She ran until her golden furs melted and became one with the sun.

Letting Teya walk away towards a future without her was the hardest thing Bridget could remember ever facing. It wasn’t forever but it still felt like a real goodbye. She knew when she visited that things wouldn’t be the same, and she knew this was because each visit would come with a departure.

Bridget would not force her presence in her life, and by now she also knew that Teya would never ask her to stay. She didn’t know why but that why didn’t matter when it came to what happened next. Teya would go home and try to heal and Bridget would face a future forever struggling with what ifs

She lingered with them as long as they stayed and afterwards until they’d disappeared entirely. She kept it together until then, but as the sun began to set and she faced the lonely journey to Brecheliant, Bridget fell apart. She was glad she’d at least succeeded in sending Teya off because she never would have wanted this to be the image her friend carried with her.

She would visit soon. The thought rang hollow in her chest, but she forced herself to her feet and onward into the darkening peaks. Nothing was set in stone. Tonight was going to be hard but every day that came after would get easier and easier to bear. Her heart wasn’t going home with her; that didn’t mean it was lost.
