Her days were long and filled with shadows. Many of her waking hours were spent confined to her den, watching over her daughters. Kukutux's words came to her often:

There is power in the blood, mm?

Reverie felt the truth in this now more than ever. Her daughters, her brother; they were the only lights among all the shadow. Even in their fragile ignorance, her youngest daughters seemed to sense her grief. When she wept, they were there.

It was the firstborn of her second litter, Dahlia, little silver flame that she was, who reached for her now. Reverie quieted at once. Her eyes fell to the girl in awed silence, and after a moment began to brim with tears of a different sort. She leaned down to kiss the tiny ashen crown. It's alright, She murmured, though she knew the girl would not hear her.

It'll all be okay, as long as we stay together, She tucked Dahlia closer to groom her, marveling all over again at how much she looked like Boone. But there was some of her, too; golden streaks at her throat, a stark reminder of the legacy she carried.
Watching me is like

watching a fire take your eyes from you
