mahler had been made and grown from hard work, and so appreciated even the most menial task for its future returns. he had not expected phaedra to take quickly to the idea, but the concept of this locale described as horrible surprised the man. 
mahler turned to see that she was teasing; he let out his breath in a quick laugh and shook his head. "i suppose if they did not come then ve vould not either, phaedra," he rejoined dryly. his amethyst eyes shone with amusement. "perhaps you could only call them vith your famous stag voice."
he chuckled and was ready to leave silencepine behind, maybe for the cool of the lagoon.
"tell me some story you have not before," the man invited, glancing sidelong at his willowy pale child.
