silhouetted in late afternoon mahler called to the wolves of rivenwood and told them of trek he must take now, before winter grew deeper. only @Star he had told of his intentions to visit elke and ciri, for it was astraeus he must bring back to the fold. and so he would enjoin that to his first quest. and he informed them now that it was the matron, the longest-lasting and highest-ranked among them, who would hold their ear as general in his absence. 
in truth, he wished to appoint her, but was unsure, gunshy; he would mull upon it during his journey.
he hung halfheartedly hoping that wylla heard his voice from the corner of whatever damned land she sequestered herself.
he fought the foolish notion in the next, steeled himself, wondered if the girl-commander was close enough to hear and know the sound of what it was. would she come now? her test would be in his absence.
