Wapun Meadow From revolution to revelation

And as expected, she did go wandering, but this time not down the western slopes of Sunspire, instead weaving her way across the tougher terrain to the east.  She hadn't been this way in ages and though it was more annoying to get to, Treason felt that maybe it would provide a slightly different selection of prey at this time of year.  Either way, she wasn't going to turn around and head home 'til she was sure that she'd be in a good state for whatever troubles might kick off between now and the next major hunt.  Had anyone even really noticed her periodic absences, or the fact that she had fared exceptionally well through the whole food crisis?

To a certain point she still didn't care.  Either way, here she was with a basically-unfamiliar meadow before her this afternoon.  And, thankfully, it had a lot of edibles scattered about from what she could tell.  Good.  Maybe she could make this a quick trip and she could wander back sooner than usual.  Terance had gone off on his escapade across the friggin' planet, so her being out here left the mountain a little more undefended than usual, even if some of those new recruits were supposed to be fighters too.  Eh.

Her nose soon latched onto a hare's trail and she set off to follow it.  Maybe it would be nice and walk right into her maw.  Yeah, right.

After that first disastrous hunting lesson, Nunataq - the once star pupil - had downsized considerably and was practicing her skills on smaller game. It turned out that this important survival skill she had to master was more complex, when you had to do it on your own. Not only the prey were not very keen on climbing in your mouth themselves, but there was a whole art of, how to open a carcass (unless it was a rodent) to get to the best bits. When left to her own devices, Nuna did a better job at focusing, watching and learning. And, when she was not stalking after her father on guardian duties, she was out in the Wapun meadow (which she considered an extension to Bearclaw valley; like a front porch), mastering her skills.

Needless to say that she was lucky in just 1 case out of 10. On most days, there were even more attempts and no results at all. But this difficulty did not deter her from trying and working. And today she believed she had hit a jackpot. Her smell memory was not that good, therefore she did not recognize scent trail left by a hare, but she happened to stumble upon the long-eared fellow by accident. It made a jump and beelined away from the five-month old, to whom it took just a second more to realize that this was the part, where she had to run as well. And very fast.

So she did and in the thrill of the hunt, she did not notice the other party, who had eyed the rabbit.

Unlike the duo, Hydra herself had no immediate interest in the long-eared critter they had taken note of. Her belly was full, and she had no hunger to speak of. The Beta had different priorities, and had decided to stray from where she had once thought her sister to be in favor of the direction @Bruges had informed her Alya had lurked in last. By her math, it made sense that Alya would have been injured around these parts and, if there were any packs, taken in by them. She lived and breathed still... this she knew, inexplicable though it was.

The meadow was open, and Hydra observed two others in the near-distance. One was a wolf whose appearance was entirely unique to Hydra, and... no, that made two wolves of unique design. A hooded she-wolf, and a masked one. Each, Hydra appreciated—but she was not here to socialize, or sightsee. Her pace was slow enough where she might be able to gauge recognition on either of their features and if she found any, that would determine her next course of action. By now, Moonspear's scent was lost among a myriad of others... strangers, territories, and the remnants each of them left behind clung to her.

If you don't like my assumptions made here, LMK and I can rewrite bits!  Or just.. Not understandable in general, this feels kinda screwy, heh.

She had been just carefully following the trail, keeping her head down as she passed through a still-tall patch of grass, when there was a bit of a scuffle up ahead.  Though her ears tipped forward, she couldn't see what was going on -- not to mention she was tracking by the ground scents not air, the wind wasn't right for her to smell what was headed her way.  She was left guessing, though her pace did quicken a bit so she could investigate.

Except that got louder and before she knew it, she was reeling backwards to avoid a collision with some comparatively smallish brown blur instead of sinking her fangs into a grey one.  Treason wasn't about to let this slight pass without a word, a unleashing a snarl at this invasion of her personal bubble, the ruining of her day.  The hell-- was about all she could put together as she realized that was some dumb kid from gods knew where messing it all up.

Her possible prey had been an easy-to-miss dart coming from a very unexpected direction, now forgotten and lost to her.  Well.  On the one hand, at least she hadn't put too much effort into that one, but outright thieving the kill (if successful) from the youth wasn't off the list.  She'd ruined Treason's hunt, after all.

It had also pointed her in a direction where she could see a black wolf looking on which she erroneously assumed this whelp belonged to, but given it might be too much for one post, she'd refrain from a pointed comment for at least a few seconds.  And if the kid actually was escorted, that meant thievery probably wouldn't go over well. Unfortunate.

If it is possible to jump in surprise mid-run, because not only a rabbit, but something a lot bigger comes into your field of vision, then Nunataq did just that, when she dashed past a piebald she-wolf in her pursue after the prey animal. This inadvertent movement, made her trip a little, but she quickly regained her balance and put more energy in the run. She caught up with the fleeing lagomorph, made an attempt to grab it once - failed - and on the second she managed to grasp it's hind leg, topple it over and in the next motion get hold of the hare's scruff and pin it down. Unsure of, what to do next and unwilling to let it go easily, Nunataq stood still with her jaws locked firmly on the loose skin of the hare's nape.

When Hydra did not see what she looked for from the stout woman, Hydra knew she would find no answers here. Her eyes fell to the other that made a mess of their hunt, though their end result surprised her. They had the animal pinned, and then... nothing. Hydra wondered who taught the cub, and her gaze fell to the confounded and irate woman. Were they hers?

Whatever the answer, she didn't really care. She had no horse in this race and was not hungry enough to consider making her own play for the captured critter. Hydra looked away and continued moving, determined to keep to her course.

SORRY FOR MY DELAY!!! Hydra out unless someone gets her attention!

Unfortunately, Treason's not exactly the most social either, haha.  You can try to call her back if you want, but otherwise she's gonna nope right out.

Her decision was the risk was too great -- not only had she been seen by the other wolf and was still likely within earshot if the kid called out, but even if she made a move to snatch the hare it would probably squeak free.  She hadn't killed it, after all, for whatever bizarre reason.  Why?  Why.  It should be instinct to kill.  Treason also had no desire to deal with someone else's child, let alone one from another pack, so she gave another snarl and turned away.

Honestly she hoped the kid screwed up of her own accord.  Treason would go find someplace less populated to find something to eat.

Unfortunate.  Stealing would have been much easier.

No one came to aid, therefore the stand-still situation did not resolve itself for another 5 minutes. The rabbit was trembling, but otherwise not moving under the pressure of the younger wolf's jaws and weight. The young and inexperienced hunter, on the other hand, wished she had a spare set of jaws to finish the piece. Had she caught sight of any of the two grown-ups, who just stood watching her struggle, who thought that "killing was an instinct", but did nothing to help, she would have felt bitter. Since she had not, Nuna's brain searched for the proper solution.

One such came, when she decided to lie down and pin the rabbit with her forepaws. The little lagomorph, feeling the wolf's hold slacken, began to kick and struggle free. Nuna - on the other hand - growled and her grasp became stronger. This lasted for a long time - not all of it is interesting to describe - and ended up with a very slobbered and frazzled, but still quite alive rabbit dashing off with it's last bits of strength, and a confused and annoyed adolescent watching it disappear.
