The air came alive with the beating of wings, and Reverie stirred at once. She slipped from Lestan's embrace, eyes already following the delicate gold-feathered creature circling above. A bird! She thought, inexplicably, of Everett —
And then it was gone in a flash of gold, and Reverie was an answering burst of light in its wake. Where was Everett now? She wondered as she ducked through bushes and skirted trees in pursuit of the bird. The twins, the sweetest and furthest adrift of her brothers; she missed them, if she was honest with herself. She missed hazy nights dancing with Evander and all the rest, she missed the shy look Everett got whenever she smiled at him. As if he really didn't expect her to mean it. He deserved to be smiled at by someone who meant it.
It just couldn't be her. She caught glimpses of the bird through the trees as she followed, further now through Swiftcurrent Creek. A hint of something beautiful, a promise of a sunrise that might touch more than just the sky. Reverie stopped only at the border, when she knew she could not follow any further. Gold fluttered at the corners of her vision, closer now, and she looked up to find the gilded bird circling her, dipping and dancing in the air for a few breathless moments. It didn't last. All the most beautiful things faded too quickly, Reverie thought. Soon it was off again, fading into the night like a dream. She could do nothing but watch.
But she felt she understood.
