Somehow she had ended up turning inward towards the mountains, captivated by their rising heights and how they differed from that of the plateau she was so familiar with. They were not void of forestry of course; Phoebe didn't dare climb to heights she couldn't handle, and truthfully they were frightening in their own right. But there were vistas there which she could lay her gaze upon with wonder, a natural curiosity that drew her towards the lake in the distance.

A lake that was also marked off, the borders accosting her long before she ever had a chance to drink from still waters fed by their own means. It was disappointing, she thought, recalling her time on the cusp of Rusalka not so fondly. But she strove to be better, to perhaps shed in some sense of what had held her back before as she lingered and toed the borderland. She could have called for someone, it would have been relatively easy, but she was not versed in the art of a dispersal wolf.

Still, she hungered more now than ever to not be alone, and company had been far and few between in this place than she would have liked to admit. No one had come calling for her yet, no one had happened upon her in a way that would render her useless and be leading her back home with guilt writ cleanly upon her features. It was freeing, to be out here, to be alone, even when she was tiring of the trivial necessity of company.

Long had she stowed the thoughts of what if and rather easily grasped the concept of what else; she could not help but wonder what the wolves here were like, and if they would be like those she had recently met or completely different altogether.

he wandered, for his thoughts had fractured, and somehow he must gather their pieces and remold them, remold himself. and so, as it was all he knew to do, mahler removed himself to the borders for an extended patrol of their long territory. gone was the time when he had believed diaspora could hold all the sunspire themselves; mahler had come to doubt that they would survive the winter, not with so many young mouths to feed.
the earth was warm beneath his paws, promise of a summertime heat that had yet to abate; he crossed beneath the cool shadows of a birch-stand and lay his eyes upon the tall shadow cast by a lone, ancient oak tree. a sudden and brazen thought came to the gargoyle, but he put it away, opting to continue on as dragomir's face swam before his wounded mind's eye.
in time, mahler came upon the slender form of a dark girl, near enough to diaspora to warrant a pausing in his own tracks. charcoal ears flicked forward; he studied her for a long moment before chuffing to garner her attention on the tail end of a slow approach.

She was not alone for long in her wandering—his voice reached out to her through the depths, stealing away whatever daydream thoughts lingered. If not for the varying shades of ash in his coat and the unusual shade of his eyes she may have mistaken him for another cut from her own. He was imposing, rightfully so even, and doubt threatened to clout where uncertainty bloomed.

"Hello," she offered in turn, trying to pull a disarming, friendly smile together. Would he be like the girl at the borders of Rusalka, stern and direct? Disapproving even, that she dared to come close to their borders without any sense of what she was doing and why. But she had yet to be turned away in these wilds with teeth set to flesh, only in words.

a smile lit her features; mahler suspected it was not genuine, and wondered why she would bother with the gesture. however, he was not the sort who went about grinning at his fellows — he did not pass judgement but lifted his muzzle some ways, gaze level upon her.
”i am mahler. you are close to diaspora, vhere i rule,” he rumbled in his clipped tones, curious about why she had come so close but had not summoned a wolf of the land.

He didn't return the smile and already she felt as though this was not going to go according to plan either. Her smile faltered gently, but stilted; Mahler cut to the chase of things, a single sentence more or less summing up anything she could have needed to know. Except she hadn't intended to discover that he had an accent.

Though it piqued her interest, Phoebe didn't dare pry into it any more than the words that stumble out of her mouth ahead of her own thoughts. "Diaspora," she said, trying the name on her own tongue. "That sounds pretty... does it mean anything?" But perhaps he wouldn't share such knowledge with a stranger, and she would have to be fine with that too.

She knew she wasn't supposed to wander close to the borders, and she especially wasn't supposed to confront any strangers who showed up there; her father's anger had made that clear the last time she had done it. But, getting in trouble hadn't stopped her from doing anything before, so why would it stop her from following Mahler to the borders now? Initially, she had just been curious and wanted to see what he was doing; he was her favorite after uncle Sadiq, and she had been excited to scent him near. But, the new scent had made her angry, so she ran on too long puppy legs until she spotted the Kapitän and the ebony stranger. She trotted confidently to Mahler's side, holding her tail up and glaring at the intruder, her hackles raised a little. She hadn't heard anything that was said before now, but she assumed they were waiting for am explanation, so she continued to stare intensely at the stranger.

the pair were unceremoniously joined by a bristling monarch — unbidden, a look of amusement colored mahler's features for a rare moment as he gazed at the girl before returning his attention to their companion. "i do not believe anyvone has asked that before," the gargoyle rejoined with a twitch of his lips, an almost-smile."it means ve are a place of ambition, and the sunspire is ours."
and while mahler did not fully believe in the idea, he and stigmata must not have engendered it for nothing. therefore, he would uphold it until it came to pass that the concept was not possible. he wished to ask her why she had come, but held back, glancing at monarch again with an affectionate glint in his lavender gaze.
it was not to be, and the diasporans watched the would-be joiner depart. mahler was not dismayed; he led monarch away for a small hunt and a lesson, deciding to choose wisely of their time together.
