All Welcome
set before she leaves! And after FIig

There was one more wolf Fennec wanted to see.  She kept a careful distance from the rest of her family... she couldn't handle more arguments.  Fennec was tapped for the day, and every one just brought her enthusiasm for this trip lower and lower.

She hoped that @Wraen would have little to say, and that she'd be glad for the chance she was taking.  It was a toss up, based on previous talks... but being the only wolf who had invited her, who had given her the opportunity to really explore, meant there was no way Fennec was going to bounce without saying at least goodbye.

Sometimes Wraen had a feeling that she and the joint Blackthorn-Redhawk family lives ran in two different paralells. She was on good terms with everyone in the group and often took a role of a curious observer, but of many crisis and turmoils within the close-knit family circle she was either blissfully unaware or only heard a second-hand accounts.

Therefore, when she came upon Fennec, she knew nothing yet of, what the girl's intentions were and the wildfire it had left in their wake. The Sovereign noted that the girl had grown a bit more since the last time they had met and that - in fact - the time they had spent together had been far too short and occasions far too rare. These were regrets you had to get used to over time.

"Hey, Fenn!" Wraen greeted the girl and came closer to talk, if she so desired.

Fennec had half-worried about running into her dad again, or Bronco, and being subjected to another outrush of reasons why she shouldn't be doing this.  So when she heard movement, she tensed.... and then relaxed when Wraen announced herself.

Hey!  She let out a little breath, then smiled.  It wasn't the most sincere of ones, but that wasn't anything new.  She wasn't one for big outward displays.  I've got something I needed to tell you.  Just, promise you won't yell, okay?  I'm about done with that for the day.  It was mostly a joke, as her tone implied, but there was a grain of truth behind it.  She wasn't sure she could deal with another rant today.

Wraen believed that her yelling days were far behind her (with the notable exception of the sudden outburst at Towhee two months ago), and she did not believe that anything Fennec got to tell her, would inspire in her loud protests. "I will listen," she promised, wondering, what could it be that she was about to reveal her.

Fennec couldn't do anything but trust her, so she continued after just a brief pause.  Despite that, she was prepared for the worst.  Penn came back, and he wants to go traveling.  He asked me to come with, so I'm going to go.  She said, stating it plainly.  Dad didn't take it so well.

And now it was Wraen's turn.

That's it? Wraen's expression betrayed utter surprise, but these days there were few things that could truly rile her up. She was as calm as the sea (when there is not storm raging there) 99% of her time, which showed that she had come a long way from that spitfire yearling, who had spoken her mind boldly and without filters.

"I imagine he was," she nodded, not for the first time glad that she was not Fennec's parent, but the cool aunt that had no other responsibilities than to be supportive and listen patiently, when her niece's life had been screwed up somehow. "But that is a great step for you - don't tell you parents," she leaned in for a conspirational whisper, "but I congratulate you on making that decision."

"It is very brave of you,"
she told her, when she had leaned back again and spoke in normal tones again. "Do you plan on going somewhere certain?" not that an exact location on the map would be of any value to the blind girl.

And this was why, of everyone, Wraen was the coolest.  Towhee was cool, Phox was cool, but parents would always be parents.  Wraen had that outside appeal and, not only that, always seemed to be up for (most) of what Fennec laid down.  She'd never admit it, but if there was any wolf Fennec wanted to be like when she grew up, it was Wraen (with some of her mom tossed in, of course).

Oh, good!  Dad and Bronco were so mad, and Fig too, but he got over it.  I knew you would get it, though.  She hadnt known, it was obvious from the way she'd come into this conversation.  But she was so relieved it didn't matter.

Not really.  I'll probably let Penn pick the direction at first, but he won't be calling all the shots.  Is there anywhere cool we should go?  Wraen had traveled, Fennec knew, and while she wasn't sure she would be able to find whatever places she was given, it would be cool to have something to one-up Penn with.

Phox, Bronco, Fig even Towhee would not appreciate Wraen encouraging Fennec to test the limits of her abilities to survive outside, but they were not here to witness this exchange and, even if they had been... well, she would have stuck to her words. The Sovereign was of opinion that everyone needed to find their own way in life, they had to make their own mistakes and learn from them. There was no better way.

"Umm... well, there are plenty that come to my mind, but I don't think that you will see the same appeal as I did," Wraen replied to the inquiry about places that had to be visited. Visually appealing places did not mean a thing to the blind girl. Which meant that they had to be of some other sensory stimulus value. "Well, there is a place, where the earth breathes very hot water and it is very warm there even in winter," she thought of Fire Hot Springs and how very different they were from the rest of the world.

"Climb mountains and get the feel of solid rock beneath your paws," she said. "The air is different there, so is the aura of the place," she added. "But I think that, when you come back or for a visit - whichever you prefer - I will be very curious to hear, how the traveling went from your perspective. What it felt like. Because I have never thought in such categories before, but your suggestions will teach me something new."

sorry for stretching this!  going on a break with her, but I'll finish these last threads up first <3

Hot springs and mountains, got it.  She mentally ticked that box and underlined it, knowing that she'd definitely make good, even if she had to bite Penn's lazy butt to get him up those rocks.  She had to bite back a snorted laugh at the image of it.  Her own solo trips out had often been towards mountains, actually.  She never climbed for obvious reasons, but the slopes were weirdly comforting... like the ground itself was telling her the way out and the way home.

I guess I can manage a story or two, though you'll have to guess which parts are true, she said, lips twitching in a slight smile.  She could probably find a few good lies to toss in, keep them on their toes.  Then again, she had no idea what would happen.  I'll be back to visit soon.  With Towhee and Phox she'd said 'back home', but to Wraen, somehow, 'visit' seemed more real.  It opened up a breath she didn't even realize she'd been holding in... because honestly, what if she did fall in love with a new place?

With Penn?  Hardly a strong chance.  But one that it felt good acknowledging.

Me's been recently reading a book about mind management and there was a little wisdom there that applies well to the different ways Fenn felt about giving a promise to her parents and to Wraen. There is a big difference between "should" and "can". "You should come home" entails judgement and guilt-tripping, if you do not do that. Whereas "You can come home" means there is an opportunity, but no pressure. You can do that and you may choose well to do differently. Without knowing all this Wraen had always been the person, who preferred "can", and - in fact - it was the cornerstone of the very pack she was leading. You had always a choice and were not judged for having that option.

"I will wait eagerly for that moment," Wraen replied and she knew that she would be just as equally happy to meet Fenn "soon" and "not so soon". "Whenever that path of yours comes by this old nest," she added.

You can wrap up in your next post, if you wish! :)

Fennec nodded and, using the final words, found Wraen to give her a nudge goodbye.  She wasn't the most sentimental wolf, but occasionally, a shimmer of it showed through the cracks. She was in danger of getting a little choked up, so she'd vamoose here fast.

Definitely. Until then, make sure you tell Meerkat some good creepy ones, from me.  She said, feeling a hitch thinking of her younger sister.  She'd be a lot older probably by the time she was back.

All the better for stories and sharing though, she thought, determines.  And with a final smile, Fennec turned away, disappearing into the trees carefully.
