She wanted to take pleasure in his struggle, yet it was only painful to watch. In fact, she turned away from the pathetic sight... only to turn back to continue staring at him. She kept her expression impassive, though the stricken glow in her fiery eyes might have given her away.

He hadn't said a word—he was probably too weak—and suddenly it occurred to her that he might be disoriented. "Do you know where you are?" she snapped, feeling the whip of her tongue even if she couldn't hear the tone. Speaking more slowly, she added, "Do you know who I am?"
