A swarthy stranger materialized from the gloom, his yellow eyes immediately reminding Towhee of her older sister. She saw his lips move, though between the darkness and the distance, she couldn't make out his words. She tried to read his body and face instead, eyes riveted on him as she cautiously moved nearer.

"Hello..." she said a bit warily, her voice even throatier than usual, having just roused from sleep. "I'm Towhee. Who," she wondered, coming to a stop a few yards away, noting that he was a little smaller than herself, "are you?" Towhee shifted her weight, ears drawing backward slightly.
