As soon as she saw the question form on Dinah’s lips, Towhee couldn’t help but wonder if Caracal would have her tell his daughter that the mainland was a godless wasteland. Some of the things he’d said during her stay had certainly given her the impression that he thought little of dry land these days and that he wouldn’t want his children leaving the island anytime soon.

But Towhee didn’t give a shit what her son preferred. She would always tell the truth, even if it was ugly. And it wasn’t, in this case. Of course, the mainland wasn’t very different from the island, especially around the coastal areas. She had to laugh at Dinah’s ignorance, which she would quickly rectify.

Yes, the mainland has everything the island does, except it’s not surrounded by water. And if you go far enough inland, you can’t see water anywhere. I bet that’s hard for you to grasp, isn’t it, growing up here? Tell you what, when you’re older and more independent, I’ll take you there sometime. I’m going to be traveling anyway. You can join me for a bit.

In the meantime, surely there was something that couldn’t easily be done elsewhere. Towhee looked around for inspiration, her gaze once more drawn to the horizon. She supposed there was one thing that—while seen from just about anywhere—would never be quite the same as here. The island had the best seat in the house, as the saying goes.

What do you say you and I find the perfect little spot to watch the sunset together? Do you know which direction that means we should go?
