Towhee stood watch whilst Bushtit crept into a thicket and popped a squat: one last potty break before they hit the road back home. She stifled a yawn and shifted her weight, orange eyes idly roaming the camps from the fringe. She wished they could stay just a little longer…

How’s it going in there, squirt? she said, turning toward the brambles screening her son from view.

Of course, she could neither see nor hear any response he made. Towhee gazed at the little opening he’d crawled into and waited patiently for his tiny face to appear, her back now turned to the crowded camps.
