Someone else leaped into the fray alongside her, startling Towhee so badly that she changed course entirely. By the time she realized it was more backup from Mereo—albeit, someone she recognized only by scent—the others had successfully dragged the beast to the ground, or so she thought.

In a split second, he was lurching back to his feet and trying to flee. Towhee couldn’t be sure what her comrades intended to do but if they let him escape, what would stop him from coming back? She didn’t have the first clue about his identity except that he was a threat to Mereo and could not be allowed to live.

As he bolted, Towhee gave chase with a murderous snarl.
