It almost seemed like the bear not only understood but heeded her. Her orange eyes widened as it lowered back onto all fours and began moving away. As Towhee tracked its movements, she gave herself a mental pat on the back for presenting herself as totally unappetizing.

As the bear shrank into the distance, she felt some of the tension leaving her body. Soon, there would be enough wolves living here that their collective scents should deter an intrusion like that one. In the meantime, Towhee would wait until it was long gone before she ventured out to patrol and mark.
