There was nary a sign of disapproval on Amalia’s face. It wasn’t exactly surprising, given her nature, but Towhee knew she’d undermined the Alpha pair a bit. Then again, she’d been shouldering a lot of the responsibility lately, so maybe they considered it fair play. More likely, neither one of them wanted to look too closely at Towhee’s sex life.

Fighting a good-natured smirk, the Elder dipped her head and said, I’m not really sure how I feel about it yet, though I don’t think it’s up to me, per se. She shrugged more nonchalantly than she really felt. You know, this conversation is giving me a bit of déjà vu. How the turntables… she observed with a light laugh.

She drew in a breath, rolling some tension out of her shoulders. Okay, so Mal didn’t seem to mind much. Would Killer react the same way? She supposed he might. Honestly, it was hard to imagine him begrudging her anything, even without considering recent events.

I always think of myself as too old for this shit. But obviously nature hasn’t counted me out, so maybe I shouldn’t count myself out, Towhee posited. I mean, I’m in pretty decent physical shape, all things considered. I do think living here—not the caldera, specifically, but this histrionic slice of wilderness—has aged me. She gestured at the surrounding wilderness before concluding, Mentally and emotionally, I’m like 6,198 years old.
