She bit her lip when Jr shared Tzar’s middle name. At least the elder Towhee hadn’t stolen one of her deceased children’s names, she supposed. Her daughter didn’t seem bothered by it, if her small smile was anything to go by.

-It’s a good, strong family name,- Towhee quipped. -I know Phox named one of his boys that too, so technically I have two sons named Peregrine,- she mused.

Had she ever met that Peregrine? She honestly couldn’t remember, which felt kind of bad. She took a moment to miss her brother and wonder how he was doing these days—did he have any more children?—before clearing her throat totally unnecessarily.

-Oh, I’m so happy to hear you say that. Of course you’re welcome. Like I told Tzar, you can stay here with us in the Hobbit Hole if you’re so inclined, but nobody will take it personally if you opt for private quarters. You do whatever you need to do, Jr.-

She held her grown daughter’s eye for a moment before looking down at the pups, frowning in mild disgust at the smells they made. Puppies were as disgusting as they were adorable. For the nth time, it struck Towhee that she was doing this at her age, for the fifth—or was it sixth?—time. She clicked her tongue and shook her head lightly, then raised her gaze again and smiled softly at the child she’d probably once believed to be her last.
