Her orange eyes flicked from face to face, searching for any indication they’d heard an answering cry from Peregrine. Yet she saw only confused and stricken expressions. Towhee felt an impotent rage sweep through her even as Tzar, Jr and Hotah flanked her. She didn’t catch any of the words they spoke, her eyes once more staring into the swirling fog.

When Hotah made a movement toward the white wall, Towhee didn’t hesitate; she followed him into the miasma, then veered away. She soon lost him—and, of course, the Hobbit Hole and all its inhabitants—as she ventured into the clag. Her world was always silent, though the limitation on her vision quickly became disorienting.

It took longer than it should’ve, though the Elder somehow found her way to the bank of the lake below. She dropped her nose to the cold ground and sniffed for any trace of her son’s scent. It made no sense that Peregrine could’ve made it all the way here on his own, yet she persisted in combing the shoreline. Towhee went west at first, then doubled back and rounded east.

Her heart plummeted when she found a patch of urine just feet from the water’s edge. One sniff told her it was Peregrine’s. There was no other scent and no other trace of him beside the nearly dry patch of earth. Her eyes cut across the water, the source of the swirling fog, and a wretched scream tore loose from her throat.
