Locating a burrow sounded simple in theory, though that didn’t make it easy. Although her nose was her strongest asset, the dark complicated things a little bit. Even when Towhee thought she smelled a trail, she couldn’t see any signs of a burrow. It wasn’t until she felt around with her paw that the Redhawk pinpointed a telltale depression on the forest floor.

Without hesitation, she replaced her foot with her snout. The smell was strong. Towhee sensed something scurrying just out of reach, deeper in the earth, but she couldn’t force her muzzle any further. With a huff, she pulled her head out of the burrow and shook literal dirt out of her ears.

Good thing I don’t use them anyway, she remarked to herself as she sat back on her haunches to paw some more debris from her right ear. Does that count for the dare, even though I didn’t actually grab anything? Towhee wondered, sitting upright as she tried to find Eydis’s face in the dark.
