Hours later, Towhee stood over the decapitated head and wondered why Soto had left it there—or tasked one of his cronies to deliver it, going by scent. Was it supposed to be some sort of apology for rejecting her? Was it meant for their son? Or maybe there was some other, more nefarious intention behind it?

Towhee shrugged, deciding she didn’t care. She plucked up the head, which was more unwieldy than one might think, and dropped it off at the nearest cache. After she finished her patrol, maybe she would pick it up and take it back to the Hobbit Hole for the kids to play with.
